Rielle Hunter GQ Photos And Interview About John Edwards Affair

Source:
blogywoodbabes.blogspot.com

The Rielle Hunter-John Edwards sex scandal saga continues to entertain. For the first time, Rielle Hunter is opening up about her tumultuous affair with John Edwards, a tryst that would eventually be the end of his presidential and political aspirations. Hunter, who also appears in a mildly-exposing photo shoot, says that she and Edwards were intimate from the very beginning, and goes into specific detail about their first encounter and how things played out after that, plus the "compassion" she has for Elizabeth Edwards. The mistress and the mother of former Senator Edwards' love-child, then cried to Barbara Walters that she is repulsed by her GQ photo shoot and claimed she thought they were only going to use head shots. This prompted GQ reporter Lisa DePaulo to go on Good Morning America and essentially say "Rielle Hunter is fucking liar!" The magazine fires back after she says she was repulsed by racy shots they took of her:
"Did she say she thought they would be headshots?" GQ reporter Lisa DePaulo asked incredulously on "Good Morning America."

"Rielle is a smart woman. She knows what she wore and what she was doing in the photo shoot," DePaulo said.

Hunter, a one-time videographer for Edwards' presidential campaign, posed for the pictures wearing only a man's button down white shirt, a string of pearls and panties. In some of the photos she is posed on a bed with stuffed animals piled around her. Her panties are peeking out in one frame.

But GQ released a video of the shoot to "GMA" today and at one point the videographer asks Hunter, "You want to take a look at this?"

It is kind of hard to claim you only thought a magazine was doing head shots when you're sitting in a pile of stuffed animals without pants on. Which raises another question: Why the hell are you being photographed in your child's bedroom without pants on? I dislike John Edwards but I am feeling a bit sorry for him at this point because I am sure Ms. Hunter lied to him that she was on the pill. And now she is using his love-child to gain fame and remind him exact how stupid he his to have shot load in her. Here are portions of the GQ interview with Rielle Hunter below:

On their first night together:

"I had never experienced anything like what was flowing between us. I sat on the other side of the room. I wouldn't go near him....There was sooo much attraction and sooo much...I want to say love, but it wasn't love at that point...it was just this, this magnetic force field like I had never experienced. It terrified me. And, um, I eventually walked over to his side of the room. [laughs] He was pretty relentless."

On breaking her silence:

"I feel comfortable talking now, because Johnny went public and made a statement admitting paternity. I didn't feel like I could ever speak until he did that. Because had I spoken, I would have emasculated him. And I could not emasculate him.... He's very supportive of me talking now....

"It's been four years. It's hard to know that people are out there speaking over and over and over again untruths. Lies. Consciously going out there and spinning the truth. Using me and Johnny and our relationship to make themselves look better, to play victim, or to get money."

Did he call you after the [televised] interview [where he denied paternity of your child]?

Hunter: Yes. And he said, "I’m sorry… It doesn’t mean anything." And it didn’t. I know he loves me. We love each other very much. He’s very honest and truthful.

But the irony of what you’re saying—right now, most people think he’s the most untruthful person in America.

Hunter: Everyone talks about how Johnny has fallen from grace. In reality, he’s fallen to grace. He is integrated. He is living a life of truth.

Um, what?! Are you fucking kidding me with this? But wait there is more:

Do you think he thinks that? That he’s more integrated now?

Hunter: Yeah. I think that he thinks that he is a much wiser and a much better and a more truthful and a more integrated human being.

You mentioned that it did go through your head, on that first night, that Johnny was married. Did that bother you?

Hunter: The force field of our love overrode any issues that would arise from my belief systems about, you know, “It should be going different than it is. He should be behaving differently than he is.” He doesn’t lie to me.

How can you be sure?

Hunter: [Because] he discloses everything to me. And he has no fear of lying to me. It’s the fear of what’s gonna happen that causes the lie. The fear of the repercussions.

Let me just stop right there so you can go grab a shovel, because you're gonna need it to get through the rest of this horseshit.

So even though you know he’s lied to his wife and his state and the country, you really never worry that he will lie to you?

Hunter: No. He does not lie to me. At all. [Before me], he had a huge fear. Most of his mistakes were because of his fear of the wrath of Elizabeth. He was emasculated.

Dear God this bitch is insufferable. Not to mention all kinds of deluded. She was made for John Edwards. I wonder if Edwards is the suicide type? He is probably too full of himself to finish the job. Click on pictures to enlarge.

John Edwards' Sex Scandal Update: Grand Jury Ready to Indict Edwards

Source:
blogywoodbabes.blogspot.com

Former Sen. John Edwards is so screwed. America's most notorious weekly newspaper is repoting that Democrat John Edwards, the man the party wanted to put a heartbeat from the presidency in 2004, is about to be indicted by a Federal grand jury. At this point, the leaking of the sex video he made with his mistress Rielle Hunter is the least of his worries. Apparently, getting money was not a problem during his run for the White House. But apparently when people give you a shitload of money for your political campaign to hide your mistress that is a problem especially when you don't report the income to the IRS and a problem with the FBI if you don't fill out those pesty disclosure forums. If you want to unleash your penis for a vagina tasting tour of America, here's a hint: Don't be married, don't be running for President and keep your books in order. Just a thought. Because The National Enquirer sees an indictment in the near future of former presidential candidate, John Edwards. His wife Elizabeth… the woman who defended Johnny against that mean old Ann Coulter who mocked his masculinity. Oh dear. She will testify against her own husband at trial. A scorned woman is a very dangerous thing indeed. The National Enquirer report:

The ultimate fall from grace, a Federal grand jury is about to indict John Edwards, The ENQUIRER has learned exclusively.

In another shocker, close sources say Edwards' estranged wife Elizabeth could help send the former presidential candidate to jail!

Edwards, the disgraced two-time Presidential loser, is being investigated by the feds, including the FBI and IRS, for possible campaign violations related to paying his mistress Rielle Hunter.

The grand jury has been meeting since April 2009, and insiders say an indictment is imminent
.

"John is terrified that he's going to be indicted," a friend told The ENQUIRER.

"While he believes he's done nothing illegal in trying to hide his extramarital affair with Rielle and their daughter, he thinks the Feds are going to make an example of him."

So John Edwards might be hearing those three little words which strike fear into the hearts of politicians everywhere: "You are indicted." That's one expensive piece of pussy. Don't know what guys like John and Tiger are thinking. You'd be better off picking up a hooker. The payout amounts/hush money are MUCH less. Now it is all IRS and money stuff. Hey, when you knock up your girlfriend and you don't want voters to know, it gets expensive. As always, the story on the Enquirer website is a teaser of what is contained in today's print edition of The National Enquirer which the story reminds readers they can pick up at news stands everywhere. As I said in the early days of this scandal and during the months of the investigation, my money is on the Enquirer in this one. The things they are going to do to a pretty boy like John Edwards in prison kinda make you feel sorta sorry for him. Anyway, here are some pics while we wait for the preggo sex video to leak. John Edwards And Rielle Hunter Made An Adulterous Sex Tape While He Was Trying To Be President

Source:
blogywoodbabes.blogspot.com

If you didn't think that the John Edwards affair scandal could get any sleazier, you would be wrong because Gawker is reporting that a sex tape exists and it features a part of Edwards that is apparently larger than his brain. Former North Carolina U.S. Senator, Democratic nominee for Vice President in 2004 and candidate for Democratic presidential nomination in 2008, John Edwards, reportedly has a sex tape with his mistress Rielle Hunter, the mother of his bastard child. The two made the sex tape that was later found by Andrew Young, one-time Edwards aide and author of The Politician, a new book whose released forced Edwards to admit his paternity of Hunter's 2-year-old daughter last week. Given that Rielle was his videographer and she was handy with those videocameras, it shouldn't be a huge surprise that she might have left one running while she and John Edwards got it on. Gawker report:
Sources have told us that, in the throes of their affair, John Edwards and Rielle Hunter made a sex tape that contains "several sex acts." And that his aide, Andrew Young found it on an unmarked DVD. The tape, say both our sources, is explicit and reveals that Edwards "is physically very striking, in a certain area. Everyone who sees it says 'whoa'. She's behind the camera at first."

When rumors of the affair first broke Young was so loyal to Edwards that he pretended that he was the father of Hunter's daughter Frances Quinn, now 2. But part of Young's disillusionment with the 2004 vice presidential candidate and 2008 candidate came one day as he went through a stack of DVDs at Rielle Hunter's house. It was this betrayal that prompted Young to write his tell-all book, The Politician, out February 2.

It's expected that he'll reveal further details in that story, and in the 20/20 interview to promote it, to air on Friday. "It [the tape] was kind of the last straw for people who had sacrificed savings and jobs to lie for John," said one of our sources. "You should expect to see plenty more stories about him coming out of the woodwork when more people realize how... complicated... his motivations were."

Up until he discovered the DVD, says one of our sources, Young's devotion was typical of the "cultish" fervor Edwards brought out in his staffers. This is why, says our source, who is close to Hunter, major media organizations could not stand up the affair story despite well-intentioned efforts. "They [staffers] would do anything to stop it coming out — they lied, they bullied, they called reporters' editors and bad-mouthed them, they exchanged access."

LOL, failed presidential candidate John Edwards is well-endowed but Bill Clinton only has a 5 inch penis. So, now we know big dicks get guys everything they want, right? LOL... God work in mysterious ways. Poor Bill... I kinda doubt the sex tape rumor only because we haven't seen it yet, but time will tell. Mark February 2 on your calender and lets see what happen when the book is leased. Someone will likely shell out some big briefcases full of cash to get their hands on it, either Edwards himself or some newspaper. One thing is for sure, John Edwards is a pathetically self absorbed moron who has no concern for anyone but himself. John Edwards based his ill-fated presidential campaign on a pledge to wage class war against the wealthy in favor of everybody else in what he called the "two Americas" rich and poor. While he was busy creating two Americas of his own with his rich family in his mansion and his poor family he meets at hotels.

A federal grand jury is investigating whether Edwards misused campaign funds in his bid for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination as hush money for Hunter, with whom he struck up an affair. Hunter was paid over $100,000 by the Edwards campaign in 2006 to produce a series of videos as the campaign videographer but those videos were never used. So Edwards has something more important to worry about than a sex video. Screw the sex tape, Edwards is potentially facing serious jail time. Click on pictures to enlarge.

A then Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama and former U.S. Senator John Edwards shake hands during a rally at the Van Andel Arena on May 14, 2008 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Edwards announced his endorsement of Obama after Sen. Hillary Clinton won the West Virginia primary. A few months early Edwards asked Obama for the Vice President spot on the ticket but was turned down:

John Edwards Won Father of the Year Award, No Joke

Source:
blogywoodbabes.blogspot.com

Senator John Edwards finally admits that he’s had an affair with Rielle Hunter after months of denial. He issued the following statements last Friday regarding his affair but he is denying being the father of Hunter’s baby girl. For some reason, the official John Edwards YouTube channel still includes a speech Edwards made in 2007 accepting a "Father Of The Year" award, even though it contains various comments that sound funny/awful now that the former presidential candidate and Senator has admitted to cheating on his dying wife. Of course, the Edwards camp was busy dealing with Nightline late last week, and maybe they also figured removing the speech would lend credence to charges Edwards fathered a love child, which he still denies. Plus, at six minutes long, the YouTube video is a slog but it has moments of fantastic irony.

So this sex scandal has hit rock bottom, the sickest thing I have ever heard is that Edwards' mistress is waiting for his wife to die from her incurable cancer. The mistress want to marry John Edwards after Elisabeth Edwards is dead. The Democratic Party dodge a bullet not nominating this dude to be their candidate for President. But Hillary Clinton should be pissed as balls because if it was not for Edwards in the late stages of the primaries she would have won the nomination.

Edwards' public statment about his affair:

“In 2006, I made a serious error in judgment and conducted myself in a way that was disloyal to my family and to my core beliefs. I recognized my mistake and I told my wife that I had a liaison with another woman, and I asked for her forgiveness. Although I was honest in every painful detail with my family, I did not tell the public. When a supermarket tabloid told a version of the story, I used the fact that the story contained many falsities to deny it. But being 99% honest is no longer enough.”

And he goes on …

“I was and am ashamed of my conduct and choices, and I had hoped that it would never become public. With my family, I took responsibility for my actions in 2006 and today I take full responsibility publicly. But that misconduct took place for a short period in 2006. It ended then. I am and have been willing to take any test necessary to establish the fact that I am not the father of any baby, and I am truly hopeful that a test will be done so this fact can be definitively established. I only know that the apparent father has said publicly that he is the father of the baby. I also have not been engaged in any activity of any description that requested, agreed to or supported payments of any kind to the woman or to the apparent father of the baby.

It is inadequate to say to the people who believed in me that I am sorry, as it is inadequate to say to the people who love me that I am sorry. In the course of several campaigns, I started to believe that I was special and became increasingly egocentric and narcissistic. If you want to beat me up - feel free. You cannot beat me up more than I have already beaten up myself. I have been stripped bare and will now work with everything I have to help my family and others who need my help.

I have given a complete interview on this matter and having done so, will have nothing more to say.”

Meet John Edwards
By John Tabin
Published 8/11/2008 12:08:30 AM

John Edwards hasn't stopped lying.

After many angry denials that he had sex with that woman, Rielle Hunter, Edwards went on Nightline Friday to confess that yes, he did have an affair with Hunter, and yes, he was caught by National Enquirer reporters while visiting Hunter last month at the Beverly Hilton.

But he was quick to add several caveats:

(A) The affair was brief; it started and ended in 2006. This was when his wife's cancer (which is now terminal) was in remission, he makes a point to emphasize.

(B) Rielle Hunter's baby, who was born in February, is not his. Because of the timing, "it's not possible."

(C) The affair happened after he hired Hunter, who had no real filmmaking experience to speak of, to film behind-the-scenes campaign videos for $114,000.

(D) He knows nothing about any hush-money Hunter has received.

(E) He knows nothing about where the National Enquirer got a picture of him holding a baby in what appears to be a Beverly Hilton hotel room.

All of these assertions are suspect. One is demonstrably false.

Start with (A). If the affair had been over so long ago, why was Edwards still visiting Hunter so recently? His answer is that he was meeting with her to convince her not to talk to the press. But why was he worried about the press?

The mainstream press, shamefully, had totally ignored the story, to the point that this is as much a media scandal as a sex scandal. The New York Times was happy to run vague innuendoEnquirer in October 2007.

A McCain spokesman declined to comment when I asked him on Friday whether there's a partisan double-standard in how the media handles adultery rumors. Readers can draw their own conclusion.

As for the Enquirer, it hadn't run anything on Edwards since December. If the goal was to keep his name out of the tabloid's pages, it was pretty dumb to risk getting caught in the same place with Hunter.

Why didn't he just pick up the phone? And if the affair was over as early as 2006, why was Hunter still on the Edwards campaign payroll through April 2007?

If his claim about the timing of the affair is false, that of course undermines assertion (B), that Hunter's baby can't possibly be his. Edwards said on Nightline that he's willing to take a paternity test. But read between the lines of the exchange:
about John McCain on its front page in February (the week before Hunter's baby was born) but fastidiously avoided looking into the Edwards affair, which was first reported by the

WOODRUFF: Have you taken a paternity test?

EDWARDS: I have not, I would welcome participating in a paternity test. Be happy to participate in one. I know that it's not possible that this child could be mine because of the timing of events, so I know it's not possible. Happy to take a paternity test, and would love to see it happen.

WOODRUFF: Are you going to do that soon?

EDWARDS: I'm only one side -- I'm only one side of the test, but I'm happy to participate in one.

WOODRUFF: Has Miss Hunter said, she does not want to do this DNA test?

EDWARDS: I don't know what she has said.

That "I'm only one side" line sort of came out of nowhere, didn't it?

It should have been no surprise to careful viewers of the Nightline interview that Hunter issued a statement through her lawyer Saturday that "Rielle will not participate in DNA testing or any other invasion of her or her daughter's privacy now or in the future."

Edwards seemed to be anticipating just such a response from Hunter. Rather than demanding a paternity test to clear his name, he explicitly tossed the ball into Hunter's court.

Hunter response -- invoking her and her daughter's privacy -- is a little odd if she expects the test to come up negative. How much of an invasion of privacy is it to prove that someone isn't

THE ASSERTION THAT IS definitely untrue is (C). Sam Stein of the Huffington Post has plenty of evidence that Edwards and Hunter knew each other for seven months before Hunter was hired by the campaign. Emails from those seven months indicate that the affair was going on.

There's no mystery as to why Edwards would lie about that: It would be one thing if Edwards had an affair with someone who happened to work for him, but anyone who donated to the Edwards campaign has to be appalled to learn that Edwards hired this woman because she was his mistress. This moves the scandal beyond mere sex and into the realm of financial corruption.

Speaking of which, ABC News has confirmed that Rielle Hunter has received $15,000 a month to hide from the press in Santa Barbara, California. Her benefactor is Fred Baron, who was national finance chair to the Edwards campaign. Did Baron really drop all that coin without so much as a "don't worry, I'll take care of this" to Edwards?

(Also hiding in Santa Barbara on Baron's dime: Andrew Young, an Edwards campaign aide who has claimed that he is the real father of Hunter's baby. When Young moved to California, he brought along his wife and children. His wife is either really, really easygoing about infidelity, or she knows that her husband is taking the fall for Edwards.)

That brings us to (E), the photo of Edwards holding a baby. It's probably not from the same night that Enquirer reporters confronted Edwards -- the text accompanying the photos never says that it is, and his shirt doesn't match the dress shirt that both he and the Enquirer say he was wearing that night.

Enquirer editor-in-chief David Perel has told the Washington Post that there was at least one other meeting between Hunter and Edwards at the Hilton. Presumably we'll learn more. It's become clear that the Enquirer has been intentionally holding things back and letting them trickle out slowly, the better to sell papers.

In his Nightline interview, Edwards repeatedly derided the National Enquirer, dismissing it as just another supermarket tabloid printing spurious rumors.

Now, it's true that the Enquirer doesn't adhere to standard journalistic practices. The tabloid routinely pays sources for information, which can invite mischief if sources are greedy and dishonest.

But at this point in the story, it's no longer the supermarket tabloid that has the big credibility problem -- it's John Edwards.
your child's father -- especially when you've already made public assertions about the child's paternity on the record?

Johnny Reid "John" Edwards (born June 10, 1953 in Seneca, South Carolina, USA) is an American politician who served one term as U.S. Senator from North Carolina. He was the Democratic nominee for Vice President in 2004, and was a candidate for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination through the January primaries, until dropping out, and later endorsing Senator Barack Obama.

He defeated incumbent Republican Lauch Faircloth in North Carolina's 1998 Senate election and toward the end of his six-year term sought the Democratic presidential nomination in the 2004 presidential election.

He eventually became the 2004 Democratic candidate for Vice President, the running mate of presidential nominee Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts. Bush and Dick Cheney, Edwards began working full time at the One America Committee, a political action committee he established in 2001, and was appointed director of the Center on Poverty, Work and Opportunity at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law. He was also a consultant for Fortress Investment Group LLC.

Edwards was born June 10, 1953 to Wallace Reid Edwards and Catharine Juanita "Bobbie" Edwards (née Wade) in Seneca, South Carolina. The family moved several times during Edwards' childhood, eventually settling in Robbins, North Carolina, where his father worked as a textile mill floor worker, eventually promoted to supervisor; his mother had a roadside antique finishing business and then worked as a postal letter carrier when his father left his job.

A football star in high school, Edwards was the first person in his family to attend college. He attended Clemson University and transferred to North Carolina State University. Edwards graduated with high honors earning a bachelor's degree in textile technology in 1974, and later earned his Juris Doctor from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) with honors.

While at UNC, he met Elizabeth Anania, who is four years his senior. They married in 1977 and eventually had four children (Wade in 1979, Cate in 1982, Emma Claire in 1998, and Jack in 2000). Their son Wade was killed in a car accident when strong winds swept his Jeep off a North Carolina highway in 1996. Three weeks before his death, Wade Edwards was honored by First Lady Hillary Clinton at The White House as one of the 10 finalists in an essay contest sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Voice of America for an essay he wrote on entering the voting booth with his father. Wade, accompanied by his parents and sister, went on to meet North Carolina Sen. Jesse Helms, who entered Wade's essay and his obituary into the congressional record. Edwards and his wife began the Wade Edwards Foundation in their son's memory; the purpose of the nonprofit organization is "to reward, encourage, and inspire young people in the pursuit of excellence." The Foundation funded the Wade Edwards Learning Lab at Wade's high school, Broughton High School in Raleigh, along with scholarship competitions and essay awards.

On November 3, 2004, Elizabeth Edwards revealed that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. She was treated via chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and continued to work within the Democratic Party and her husband's One America Committee. On March 22, 2007, during his campaign for the 2008 Democratic nomination for the presidency, Edwards and his wife announced that her cancer had returned; she was diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer, with newly discovered metastases to the bone and possibly to her lung. They said that the cancer was "no longer curable, but is completely treatable" and that they planned to continue campaigning together with an occasional break when she requires treatment.

Sen. John Edwards' Adultery Sex Scandal and Love Child Controversy

John Edwards is now embroiled in a love child scandal with a former employee for his campaign, the National Enquirer originally broke the stoy. John Edwards allegedly got Rielle Hunter pregnant while his wife Elizabeth Edwards is dying from cancer. His name had been mentioned as a possible vice presidential running mate for Democratic candidate Barack Obama. Bloggers and journalist have been intensely debating the issue for days. But on Friday, ABC News took the plunge by becoming the first mainstream media outlet to go big on the John Edwards extramarital-affair story. But all the journalism credit should go to the National Enquirer for doing some old fashion investigating reporting. Click on pictures to enlarge.

John Edwards Now Admits Affair, But Still Denies Fathering Child

Former U.S. Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards has admitted to having had an extramarital affair with a woman he met in a New York City bar in 2006, ABC News reported on Friday.

Saying he was "ashamed of my conduct and choices," former North Carolina senator and onetime Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards today admitted publicly that he had an affair with a campaign videographer in 2006 and said that his original denials were lies, but he emphatically denied the Enquirer newspaper's report that he also fathered the woman's 5-month-old child.

Hunter's daughter, Frances Quinn Hunter, was born Feb. 27, 2008, and no father's name is given on the birth certificate filed in California.

The National Enquirer first reported on the affair in October 2007, and Edwards denied it.

"The story is false," he told reporters. "It's completely untrue, ridiculous." He professed his love for his wife, Elizabeth, who had an incurable form of cancer, saying, "I've been in love with the same woman for 30-plus years and as anybody who's been around us knows, she's an extraordinary human being, warm, loving, beautiful, sexy and as good a person as I have ever known.

So the story's just false."

Wife Elizabeth

In the interview, scheduled to air on ABC News' "Nightline," Edwards said the tabloid had been correct when it reported on his meeting with Hunter at the Beverly Hills Hotel last month.

Last month, the Enquirer carried another article stating that its reporters had accosted Edwards in a Los Angeles hotel where he had met with Hunter after her child's birth. Edwards called the account "tabloid trash," but he generally avoided reporters' inquiries, as did his former top aides.

Edwards told ABC News correspondent Bob Woodruff he did have an affair with 44-year-old Rielle Hunter, but said that he did not love her.

In a written statement issued hours after ABC News quoted Edwards as having admitted the affair in an interview to be broadcast tonight, the 2004 Democratic vice presidential nominee said apologies to his loved ones and supporters were "inadequate," and he berated himself in striking terms.

"In the course of several campaigns, I started to believe that I was special and became increasingly egocentric and narcissistic," Edwards wrote. "If you want to beat me up -- feel free. You cannot beat me up more than I have already beaten up myself. I have been stripped bare and will now work with everything I have to help my family and others who need my help."

He said he would have "nothing more to say" on the matter in the future.

In an interview airing tonight on ABC's "Nightline," Edwards acknowledged that he had the extramarital affair and repeatedly lied about it. The affair came during a campaign in which he stressed the importance of family and in which his wife, Elizabeth, who suffers from an incurable form of cancer, played a prominent role.

Edwards dismissed the allegations of an affair with Rielle Hunter as "tabloid trash" after they surfaced in the National Enquirer.

Despite today's admission, he told ABC he is not the father of Hunter's infant daughter, as the Enquirer has charged, and he repeated that denial in his written statement.

He told ABC that Elizabeth Edwards did not know he had a secret late-night meeting with Hunter last month at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in California, as the Enquirer reported.

The woman subsequently was hired by an Edwards political action committee to produce documentaries, according to the reports. Edwards, whose wife Elizabeth is suffering from incurable cancer, pulled out of the Democratic race for president earlier this year. During his campaign, he denied that he had an extramarital affair.

Edwards told ABC he did not love Hunter, adding that he knew he was not the father because the affair ended too soon for that to be the case. The baby was born on Feb. 27. Another former Edwards campaign aide, Andrew Young, who is married, has stepped forward to say he is the father, and Hunter has said that as well.

"In 2006, I made a serious error in judgment and conducted myself in a way that was disloyal to my family and to my core beliefs," Edwards said in his statement. He said he told his wife about the affair and asked her forgiveness but did not inform the public, basing his denials on what he said was the fact that the story by the "supermarket tabloid" contained "many falsities."

But now, he said, "being 99 percent honest is no longer enough."

Although he said he was ashamed of his conduct, he noted that the affair "took place for a short period in 2006" and "ended then."

Edwards added: "I am and have been willing to take any test necessary to establish the fact that I am not the father of any baby, and I am truly hopeful that a test will be done so this fact can be definitively established. I only know that the apparent father has said publicly that he is the father of the baby. I also have not been engaged in any activity of any description that requested, agreed to or supported payments of any kind to the woman or to the apparent father of the baby."

Edwards's admission, which followed several weeks in which he avoided reporters and refused to answer their questions, came as top campaign aides to Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) were debating whether Edwards should speak at this month's Democratic convention. Several said privately that the Enquirer stories had become such a distraction that they would prefer the Democrats' 2004 vice-presidential nominee have no role at all. Edwards, who drew live network coverage in May when he endorsed Obama for president, had been expected to have a prominent speaking slot to discuss poverty issues at the Denver gathering.

Most major news organizations, including The Washington Post, did not report the allegations against Edwards because of a lack of corroboration. But a debate has swirled on Internet sites and on Fox News over whether media outlets were protecting the former senator, either out of bias toward a Democrat or sympathy for his wife.

The story began to draw more mainstream coverage after the Charlotte Observer reported last week that the birth certificate for Hunter's baby lists no father. The North Carolina media, followed by the New York Daily News, have been reporting on the political implications of the story that Edwards was refusing to address. Edwards has walked away from reporters and refused to answer their questions on several occasions recently.

Most mainstream news organizations refrained from reporting the story, but newspapers in Charlotte and Raleigh, North Carolina, recounted the Enquirer's allegations in prominent articles Thursday. Edwards acknowledged the affair Friday afternoon, traditionally a slow news period even when the Olympic Games' opening ceremonies are not preoccupying millions of Americans.

Edwards was a top contender for the Democratic nomination for president, pursuing his party's nod even after announcing in March 2007 that his wife's breast cancer had spread to her bone.

Elizabeth Edwards disclosed in November 2004, shortly after her husband's defeat, that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer.

After months of remission, the couple announced the recurrence of the cancer 2½ years later.

He placed second in the Iowa caucuses last January but dropped out of the race a few weeks later. He has been mentioned as a possible vice presidential choice for Barack Obama. The former North Carolina senator was the Democratic nominee for vice president in 2004.

The Edwardses have three children - Cate, Jack and Emma Claire.

Another son, Wade, died at age 16 in a 1996 car accident.

David Bonior, Edwards's campaign manager for his 2008 presidential bid, said Friday he was disappointed and angry after hearing about Edwards' confession.

"Thousands of friends of the senators and his supporters have put their faith and confidence in him and he's let them down," said Bonior, a former congressman from Michigan. "They've been betrayed by his action."

Asked whether the affair would damage Edwards's future aspirations in public service, Bonior replied: "You can't lie in politics and expect to have people's confidence."

In 2006, Edwards' political action committee paid $100,000 in a four-month span to a newly formed firm run by Hunter, who directed the production of just four Web videos, one a mere 2½ minutes long.

The payments from Edwards's One America Committee to Midline Groove Productions started July 5, 2006, five days after Hunter incorporated the firm in Delaware.

At the time Hunter was compiling the videos in 2006, Edwards was preparing a run for president.

Episode 1 of the four videos captures a conversation between Edwards and an unseen woman as the two chat aboard a plane about an upcoming speech in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Cutting between clips of the speech and the conversation with the woman, Edwards touches on his standard political themes, declaring that government must do a better job of addressing the great issues of the day, from poverty and education to jobs and the war in Iraq.

"I want to see our party lead on the great moral issues - yes, me a Democrat using that word - the great moral issues that face our country," Edwards tells the crowd. "If we want to live in a moral, honest just America and if we want to live in a moral and just world, we can't wait for somebody else to do it. We have to do it."

The sound track for the six-minute video is the song "True Reflections" which begins with these words: "When you look into a mirror, do you like what's looking at you? Now that you've seen your true reflections, what on earth are you gonna do?"

A video titled "Plane Truths," opens with Edwards relaxing in his seat on the plane, telling the unseen woman that "I actually walked the country to see who I am, who I really am, but I don't know what the result of that will be.

Edwards adds: "But for me personally, I'd rather be successful or unsuccessful based on who I really am, not based on some plastic Ken doll that you put up in front of audiences, that's not me, you know?"

The couple's marriage was always regarded as a political asset for Edwards. Elizabeth's warm, engaging everywoman appeal balanced her husband's more distant demeanor and Ken-doll looks. The anguish they've endured—the loss of their son Wade in 1996 and Elizabeth's battles with cancer—further humanized them. Because voters responded favorably to all this, Edwards's campaign advisers dispatched Elizabeth regularly to campaign alongside her husband in the buildup to the Democratic primaries. Edwards's "total life story is a plus … and certainly having a strong marriage for 29 years is a key part of that life," longtime adviser Ed Turlington told reporters in March 2007. "I have observed them up close as a married couple and family for more than 20 years. What you see in public is the private reality—that is, a strong marriage, a partnership, love and affection. And it appears to me that they're even closer today than they were when I first met them years ago."

At the time Turlington spoke, Edwards had already engaged in his affair with Hunter. Months later, in the final weeks before the Iowa caucuses, a reporter sat down with Edwards to discuss the campaign and his life story. Asked about the lessons he learned from the 2004 campaign, he said, "I'd been through a national campaign, a national spotlight, and there's a seasoning and a toughness that comes from doing that. And Elizabeth's health, the two of us went through that, our family went through that together. And I think my feeling is that I'm going to tell people, I'm going to speak the truth, whatever the consequences are … The most important thing for me is to be direct and honest with people and for them to just see me."
